Smelly Dogs

Why does your dog smell?

The first step is to work out why your dog smells. Once you have identified the cause, it will be a lot easier to put an end to the stench! Washing your dog with shampoo may only solve the problem temporarily.

Reasons why dogs can smell

There are many reasons why a dog can smell, but here are a few common ones:

  • Rolling in something outdoors. Many dogs like to roll around the garden, and they could have rolled in faeces
  • Health reasons. There are certain health issues that could cause odours such as breath, diseased gums and other infections
  • Flatulence. Perhaps the smell isn’t your dog, but is coming from your dog

What to do about a dog that smells

Once you have identified the cause of the smell, you can take action. A dog that has been rolling around in something that stinks, will of course need a wash. There are many dog shampoos on the market to choose from. If this is a regular occurrence, make sure you keep their outdoor play area tidy. Pick up poop regularly. You can’t always control this, so it may mean that your pooch needs regular grooming sessions. You can either do this yourself, or schedule in a regular session with a professional groomer. Health-related smells

If you can’t get to the bottom of the smell, it is best to go to the vet. It’s always a good idea to rule out any potential health issues. A vet will be able to recommend the best course of action. Most importantly, you want to ensure your dog is healthy and doesn’t have any serious health concerns.

Flatulence

If your dog is creating a lot of smells, then it may be dietary related. Again, it’s best to visit a vet who can rule out anything sinister. If it’s diet related, you may have to make some adjustments.

Regular care and grooming is always going to help your dog as well. Just like we need to take care of our hygiene, your pooch will benefit from some care too!
